Lions and Tigers Extended Trailer from Papercut Pictures on Vimeo.

So it’s taken a little longer than planned but here is the extended trailer for Lions and Tigers.

We hope you enjoy it and as per usual and feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Here is some brief blurb about the film:

Lions and Tigers is the story of the South Sudan wheelchair basketball team.

The team was nothing but a dream for the captain Gatluak while he and a number of the other players were living in a Kenyan refugee camp where they were exiled having lost limbs during a brutal civil war.

With South Sudan gaining its independence from Sudan in 2011, a new era full of hope and possibility dawned in the country. But the new nation still faces a huge number of challenges. Ongoing tensions with the north and huge economic problems have cast a shadow over what was, for the vast majority of South Sudanese, a momentous occasion, drawing a line under two long and violent wars lasting more than 40 years.

The film looks at the team and their personal stories of war, refugee life, coming to terms with their disability and returning home. It also examines the legacy of the war and what the future holds for the country.

They prove that disability can be overcome in even in the harshest of conditions and that there is hope for this new nation.

Behind the Needle 3 – Part 4 in the London Tattoo Convention series filmed exclusively for Zeitgeist magazine.

“Tattooing has become a victim of its own popularity” Zele

Behind the Needle 3 – part of the exclusive tattoo series filmed with Papercut Pictures for Zeitgeist magazine – features three more notable tattoo artists. Ninoslav Zelenovic aka Zele from Zagreb Tattoo, Jason Donahue from Idle Hand and Alex Binnie from IntoYou London/Brighton talk about the past, present and future of the tattoo world. Has it really become a victim of it’s own popularity in this Facebook-obsessed world?

Zele used to be a military man and this is reflected in his love of historical, ethnic and traditional styles of tattooing. His tattoos reflect his value system and past. In this film he also talks about the negative impact of the growing popularity of tattoos and how this affects those who have been in the business for a long time.

Jason Donahue has always been into art and as soon as he got his first tattoo he realised he’d found something he really wanted to do. His influences come from the past, his strongest being American traditional and Japanese. He also talks about the explosive nature of the tattoo industry now and the fact the he is his own biggest critic – constantly seeking tattoo perfection.

Tattooing was a very ‘closed’ world when Alex Binnie started out, and not at all fashionable. He tells us about his varied style and how the industry has changed since he has been a part of it. He talks about tattooing as a beautiful contract between the tattooer and the person being tattooed that avoids the constraints of the gallery system.

“I don’t know if I really felt inspired, in as much as I kind of fell into it.” Ryan Mason, Scapegoat Tattoo, Portland

Behind the Needle 1 explored the motivations and inspirations behind four renowned artists’ work, Behind the Needle 2 features four more of our favourites: Ryan Mason (Scapegoat Tattoo, Portland), Jo Harrison (Modern Body Art, Birmingham), Steve Vinall (The Family Business, London) and Brian Thomas Wilson (Scapegoat Tattoo, Portland).

Ryan tells us how he needed to find something to do with his life, that wasn’t a shitty job after dropping out of art school, and what’s it’s like tattooing in Portland.

Jo talks about punks, rockers and what it’s like being in the tattoo world as a woman. She was actually pregnant at the time of filming and has since given birth to a beautiful baby girl called Marley.

Since Steve has been able to hold a pencil all he has really done is draw, he sees tattooing as one of the strongest and most permanent ways to put your imagery into the world.

Brian tells us how he got lucky by being offered an apprenticeship and was ‘pretty bad’ for a long time. Now he loves the symbolism of fairy tales in his tattoos. He works with Ryan at Scapegoat, and as you can see from the film, they really love each other, ahh.

When I was a kid I saw a guy in McDonalds that was covered in tattoos and I thought it looked tough” Chad Koeplinger

This film moves on from the convention, as each of the artists delves deeper into their personal motivations for becoming a tattoo artist, their distinctive style of tattooing, their heroes, inspiration and who they like to get tattooed by.

This film features Chad Koeplinger of Paradise Tattoo, Washington DC;  Michelle Myles of Daredevil Tattoo, New York City; Uncle Allan of Conspiracy Inc., Copenhagen and Claudia De Sabe  of Jolie Rouge, London.

Chad always wanted to travel and tattooing definitely seemed like a more viable way to do this than the merchant marines. His style is strongly rooted in western traditional, but his experimentation in a variety of styles has allowed him to thrive as an artist.

From her underground origins in New York City, Michelle began her career when tattooing was illegal. She talks about her journey and the changes in her style and technique since its legalisation in 1997.

Uncle Allan’s love for tattooing derived from his passion for music and this is illustrated in his distinctive artistic style. His theme for the convention was ‘metal and satanic stuff’, see the first film in the series for his burning bible tattoo.

Claudia was encouraged to get into tattooing by her friends who hung out in tattoos shops, they could see her raw talent as an artist. She has two very distinctive styles of tattooing and in this film she talks about her love of both styles and how she can’t let either of them go.

First film from London Tattoo Convention 2011 for Zeitgeist Magazine…

Words courtesy of Alice Snape (Contributing Editor from Zeitgeist Magazine and Co-Producer of the films)

This film is the first in a series for Zeitgeist Magazine. Shot at the London Tattoo Convention on September 23rd, 24th and 25th 2011, this film provides an overview of the convention and asks some of the notable attending artists their feelings on the convention.

Over 20,000 visitors and 265 of the world’s best artists attended this year’s International London Tattoo Convention at Tobacco Dock in Wapping. The halls of the warehouse became a fantastical world of tattoo parlours, tattoo museums, fashion boutiques, a rockabilly club and performance stages.

Convention goers were easy to spot from the moment we arrived at Shadwell Station ready for a weekend of filming; a trilby, a pin-up style head scarf, and, of course, lots of beautifully decorated skin – wonderfully out of context on the streets of Shadwell.

When we step inside Tobacco Dock on the Friday morning there’s a definite buzz before the gates are even opened to the tattoo-collecting public as the artists set up their equipment.

Many of the artists have travelled the world to work at the convention, and while it can be easy to put ‘tattoos’ in one category, the convention truly illustrates the variety of styles and traditions in the history of the art form, as they are all there to see in the maze of Tobacco Dock.

From traditional Samoan done by hand, to antique Victoriana and old-school Americana, we spoke to some of the leading artists of each style about their particular take on the art form.

This film shows the artist’s views on the convention itself. The next film will concentrate on the artist’s and their motivations behind tattooing. Keep watching for future installments.

Clifton Mansions Eviction Party

For those who don’t know Papercut is roughly 50% based in Brixton, its a place we call home and are very proud too.  So when we heard that the Clifton Mansions was to be evicted we wanted to be there.  We wanted to be there for a number of reasons…

1) The ongoing debates in parliament other the removal of squatters rights.

2) It’s an iconic place in Brixton, part of the community as it were.

3) The fact that there is no real reason for the eviction and the ridiculous fact that once over Lambeth Council plans to pay Camelot, a private company, to provide “live-in guardians” to occupy Clifton Mansions, whilst the squatters have been providing a free guardian service for years.  Seems a little out of whack.

Any how, this article on Indymedia fills in the blanks a lot better than I do so check it out…

Aside from all this, we are filmmakers and it would have been lazy of us not to go and check it out especially once rumours of massive party began spreading.  Sadly the actual residents of Clifton Mansions were not expecting the invasion of non-locals who came purely to trash the place and themselves.  What should have been a poignant last night turned into complete anarchy and mayhem.

You can see what we managed to get before it all got a little bit sketchy by watching this short film…

All In It Together – Living With Sarcoma

This is an inspiring film about the experiences of people living with a rare form of cancer of soft tissue and bone, made as part of Sarcoma Awareness Week (13-19 June 2011).

Sarcomas are rare cancers that develop in the supporting or connective tissues of the body such as muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, blood vessels and fat. Sarcoma affects 3200 people each year including children and teenagers.

We produced this film on behalf of Sarcoma UK, as a poignant reminder of the reality of this devastating form of cancer.

The film features real-life stories about peoples experiences of living with sarcoma. The footage gives great insight into what it is like to live with a rare cancer that no-one understands or knows about, and the steps people take to live positively when faced with an uncertain future.

One of the stars of the film is Katherine , is the sister of one of the Papercut team. Sadly, Katherine died two weeks before the film’s launch.

As Papercut what she wanted more than anything was to raise awareness of sarcoma and this film is a fitting tribute to Katherine and her courage in coping with sarcoma.
Thanks go out to the participants; Katherine, Roger, Mark, Leigh, Pippa, Stacey and Lesley.

And also to Sarcoma UK.

To Katherine, who always believed…
